"Nothing is true, everything is possible"

En Släkting Till Älvorna [Among The Elves] is a film about the Swedish vocalist and living legend Freddie Wadling, an impressive and unusual character. A man who rather uninhibitedly turned from freak to virtuoso.

The film is lyrical and impressionistic portrait describing Freddie Wadling’s interpretation of reality, setting the borders in between safe and sorry. As a child, he didn´t speak for seven years; as an adolescent, he embarked a carieer as a punk rocker, today with a rich bag of songs, he has done it all, including mediaval chant and the Kurt Weill canon.

En Släkting Till Älvorna journeys through Freddie’s extraordinary life using both original material as well as footage which Freddie was asked to collect over the year the shooting did take place.

The film gradually reveals the image of a fascinating personality with, as the director Kirsi Nevanti says, ´connections among the elves...´A man who knows a lot about fear and courage, weakness and strength. In this film Wadling shares the contenta of his life experience with the viewer. "Nothing is true, everything is possible."

En Släkting Till Älvorna  is director Kirsi Nevanti’s first feature length film.

En Släkting Till Älvorna  is produced by Third Man Film (Göteborg), an independent production company. The film has been financed by Svenska Filminstitutet, Film i Väst, Sveriges Television, Triangelfilm, Konstnärsnämnden, Yle, Avek, Statens Filmcentral and Nordisk TV- och filmfond.

Freddie Wadling - A short introduction by the director

“Life is not like Disneyland. Each and every one has his own way to go, it is as if someone turned a key in one’s back and then you go as long the key keeps turning...The strange thing is that I actually managed to get out of the closed room, to the world outside”

He is a living legend in Swedish music life: Freddie Wadling. Cortex, The Leathernun, Blue for Two, The Fleshquartet are some of the constellations that Freddie has been a part of. Next project up is his own interpretations of John Dowland, lutenist, who lived at the day and age of Shakespeare.

Freddie Wadling (1951) is a man who’s music is widely respected among the music critics, but yet, after more than twenty years in music business, he has to steel food for his cats. “That is a part of the deal I have with God”, he says. Like the music, the naked and expressive voice, that became his way out of the self-assumed isolation in Freddie’s childhood. “I became autistic as I thought there were no point in talking, or to have a conversation even with myself, but I saw and heard everything. And this of course is an experience that I use in my work today...”

(working notes, 95)

This story, written on the face of Freddie Wadling, along with the music, gave me inspiration in making a film that would be “true to the spirit” of Freddie Wadling´s Universe, and not depending on the usual documentary tools. I felt a great joy in working this way, making a portrait of an outstanding artist, and  a survivor. (January 99)
